With US and UK public holidays yesterday, markets are quiet with other European stocks posting modest gains.

The US Federal Reserve has given a clear signal that rates there are set to rise again, triggering a fall in the Australian stock market.

It's been another volatile day for the Australian sharemarket, with the market closing higher by a third of a percent - edging closer to a nine-month high.

Wednesday was a much better day for the sharemarket after the ASX dropped to its lowest level in two weeks on Tuesday. It rose strongly today by 1.5 percent.
