Entrepreneurs are the backbone of every country and the driving force in the economy. It's people like us that have chosen to take on the challenge that will not only help increase the strength of our country's economy, but perhaps more importantly, grow our own personal economy and thrive.
But getting started with your own business (cash machine) is often the hardest part. What stops a lot of folks is the fear of failing. That's understandable to a certain degree, but it shouldn't let it stop you.
If you're ready to jump in and start generating cash flow through your own business, you're going to need customers. Getting that first "YES!" will undoubtedly be a fantastic feeling you'll remember for years to come.
So where do you find that first yes?
Odds are you're going to get that first sale from (or through) someone you already know. Get in touch with absolutely everyone and tell them what you're doing. Generate your own interest. Start the hype!
You know more people than you think. Once you start writing down all of your contacts chances are you'll surprise yourself by the number. Don't just rattle off your family and friends include casual acquaintances, business contacts, and people you encounter everyday.
Have you purchased a home? How many individuals do you think worked on that sale? And what about your contacts associated with your automobile? Do you have kids? Teachers, Coaches and other parents are great contacts. Don't forget about people you've hired to work for you! Painters, Plumbers, Hairdressers, Lawyers, Accountants, and so on all are good prospective customers.
When approaching people you've worked with handle yourself in a casual but professional manner. These contacts are more compelled to hear you out when they know you've done the same for them. Let them know who you are by reminding them how you know them and start a conversation about what you're doing.
You've got to get a conversation going with all your contacts. Start out by writing a personal letter outlining your new venture. If you can remember something personal about them include it. Right now you're just getting reacquainted and keeping them in the loop. If you can offer a free consultation or a first time buyers discount, do it. Better yet offer something for free. Everyone likes to get free stuff!
Follow up your letter with a telephone call a few days later (no later than a week). Touch base with them and see if you've piqued their interest. DO NOT FORGET to ask for referrals. Referrals are golden! Even if your contact says no for some reason be sure to ask if they know of anyone who may benefit from your service or product. It's a good idea to offer a "finder's fee" for referrals if you can, if not something simple like flowers or lunch will work too!
Remember that many of the people you'll be approaching have been where you are now. If you take the right approach you'll be surprised at how receptive people can be. Once you start talking with people you'll find it gets easier each time. The point is to get out there and start the conversation.
Some people might get harsh and that comes with the territory. Don't get discouraged if you get some rude people in the bunch. Shrug it off and move on. Getting sales is a numbers game, the more people you talk to the better your chances. Have fun with it!
