Red Energy is a Melbourne based, Australian owned and operated company. Red Energy was launched in 2004 and supplies electricity and to gas to homes and businesses in Victoria. They also supply electricity to customers in South Australia and parts of New South Wales.
The parent company of Red Energy is Snowy Hydro Limited, which is a major provider of hydro electricity. Snowy Hydro Limited produces around 74% of all the energy in the National Electricity Market generated from renewable sources.
In Victoria, Red Energy promises customers that for every unit of electricity they buy from Red – Snowy Hydro Limited will match that by generating one unit of electricity from a renewable source. This electricity is not GreenPower accredited because it comes from sources that were built before January 1997. However, Red Energy also offers a 100% GreenPower accredited electricity product for customers that wish to upgrade.
