AGL is one of Australia's largest gas and electricity suppliers, providing energy to more than three million homes and businesses around the country. AGL has a strong commitment to renewable energy, generating its own green power through wind and hydro electric schemes.
AGL has a number of programs committed to improving the situation for people who are homeless. Their Energy for Life investment initiative has four different strands; in 2007 their Warmth in Winter program funded the winter energy bill of close to 300 emergency accommodation facilities in NSW, Victoria, SA and Queensland. The Energy Matters initiative is focused on funding programs that deal with reducing the impact of climate change, while the Volunteering strand gives staff paid days off in order for them to give their time to supporting charities or not-for-profit organisations. Finally, the Employee Giving program encourages AGL employees to donate a proportion of their salary to a range of charities and not-for-profit organisations, and AGL matches every employee dollar with one of their own. Since 2003, AGL and its staff have raised $1.1 million for 18 organisations, including Youth Off The Streets, Garvan Institute of Medical Research and Landcare Australia.
AGL has around 1,600 employees and offices located in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Canberra. The company is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange and has approximately 116,000 shareholders, with a market capitalisation of around $5 billion.
